Um, that Pirates of the Caribbean post? Tomorrow.

For reasons.

In the meantime, I’ve been playing Sonic Colors, which I was interested in enough to buy, but not to pay full price for. Now that it’s down to $20, I jumped on it. I’ll have a bit more to say about the actual game design once I’ve finished, but until then I just want to say that the game is just beautiful, all around. You might remember that rant I made a few months back about increasingly generic video game settings, and it turns out that Sonic Colors is exactly what I had in mind when I was writing it. Its worlds have a very unique and distinctive aesthetic style without cribbing too heavily from video game convention, and it makes the game a lot stronger than the sum of its parts, I think. The sense of being in an actual place rather than a contrived obstacle course is very well done, one of the few things Sonic has historically done better than Mario, and it’s in full flower here.

In addition to the gorgeous visuals, the game also has a gorgeous soundtrack, which isn’t exactly a saving grace (several extremely bad Sonic games have had good to excellent soundtracks) but doesn’t hurt either. And the story finally — finally! — plays out more like a Saturday morning cartoon than super-serious pseudo-anime drama gibberish. Thumbs up so far; if Sega can keep Sonic on this level of quality for a few games, he might actually be worth paying attention to again.
